This term we have been learning about the marine life. I have been learning about orcas also known as the killer whale, killer whales stay away from coastal areas so they are not hunted.
Three cool facts:
* Orcas are like a family they swim together .
*If orcas are swiming togeather it is called a pod.
*an orca is a family to dolphins

ReplyDeleteI think orca might be one of my favourite marine animals. I have seen pods in real life when I was on a ferry travelling from Vancouver, to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island (Canada).
I have heard that orca use echolocation to find their prey (just like dolphins). Could you tell me more about what echolocation is and how it works?

ReplyDeleteEcholocation is listening to the waves and listening for echoes. Whales use echolocation to communicate and locate their prey. Echolocation helps whales in the dark to sense where their going also if there is any danger. A process of echolocation allows toothed whales to use sound waves to locate items even at a distance. Who did you go with to canada and how big were these orcas?

I lived in Canada for a year about 10 years ago. I stayed with my brother in Calgary, but did lots of travelling around. Vancouver Island is one of my favourite places in the world. It is a lot like NZ in some ways.
The orca were huge! Well, the adults were. The biggest one was the bull. I couldn't say exactly how big they were. I wonder what the average size of an orca bull is?

I know something about echolocation, echolocation is used to find food for example squid when is uses echolocation the squid will then hear it and send it back that is when the Orca has found food and it keeps using that technique to survive.
